Mont Ventoux finally becomes a gravel road, as all tarmac is removed.

As of today, Mont Ventoux has officially unveiled its all new gravel surface, on all 3 sides of the famous mountain. All tarmac has been removed, with loose, rocky gravel replacing the smooth surfaces which have stood for decades.

The redevelopment of Mont Ventoux into a gravel cycling destination has been in the planning for some time, due to the massive popularity and growth of gravel cycling across the world.
The local Mayor, Pierre Dure, a keen gravel rider himself, was the man who brought this vision to life, after he became bored of the same old smooth tarmac roads of Provence.

“ I wanted a challenge, something more than simply skinny 25mm tyres can handle. Now, the Giant of Provence is a true test for all riders. You will need a gravel bike in order to reach the summit, which as we all know, makes cycling much more fun. Provence is now Europe's gravel cycling epicentre, and we welcome all gravel cyclists to experience a true gravel paradise"

The Tour de France is expected to force all riders onto Gravel Bikes for it’s next ascent of the mountain, which will take place in 2025, with a triple ascent of Mont Ventoux’s new gravel surface.

What do you think? Will the new gravel surface attract more riders in 2024?

I would suggest the Stelvio Pass as a gravel road, or perhaps even better, as a waterslide 😂
